I started the brand Wright Watersport in 2021. Anyone who knows me knows I love watersports - everything from kayaking to surfing. The adrenaline and challenge of kayaking over big white water rapids allows me to switch off from my racing entrepreneurial mind.
I was in the process of setting up Wright Activities and Beezra Activities, and was looking to buy 5mm wholesale wetsuits. The best price I could find was £130 per wetsuit. 5mm wetsuits are quite special as they keep you really warm in the water in the winter and when it's very cold. I needed to buy 100 units and didn't want to spend £13,000 just on wetsuits.
Using my past experience of importing goods from Switzerland, Poland, and Germany, I set out on a mission to find an overseas supplier. After spending months ordering samples from several different suppliers, I found one I really liked (I ordered 5 different wetsuit samples and 4 were not up to a quality standard). I negotiated a deal with my favourite supplier for £80 per wetsuit, saving £5,000 on 100 units. I was very happy with this.
I run a wetsuit shop selling to public and trade. If you're an avid watersports fan and require a top-quality wetsuit at a competitive price, or want to arrange a trade deal for your retail outlet or activity business, please visit wrightwatersport.com
From this business I learned:
1. Order samples from several different suppliers before making a wholesale order.
2. Invest in a logo and user-friendly website, to enhance customer experience.
3. If you see a good business opportunity, sometimes it pays to take informed risks.
4. Follow your passion and turn into business, to ensure you enjoy working.
